A brief history.
1992
THE GADGET TREE
In the early 90’s, Joshua Burbank opened a small EDC shop in his home town of Amherst, MA years before the term “everyday carry” was popularized. Back then it was considered a gentleman’s collectible shop, with early offerings included Timex watches, Zippos, Nikon binoculars, Leatherman tools and a small selection of pocket knives.
1994
PIONEER VALLEY KNIFE & TOOL
After seeing early success with brands like Benchmade, Spyderco and Gerber, the shop was rebranded with a focus on knives and tools, broadening the selection and brands to include kitchen cutlery and greater variety of automatic knives. The name was changed from The Gadget Tree to Pioneer Valley Knife & Tool.
1997
PVKNIFE.COM
The internet was a new technology in 1996 with online commerce just getting its legs, but Burbank was an eager adopter of new tech and swiftly purchased a few domain names. By 1997 it was time to launch a website selling cutlery online while using the Pioneer Valley Knife & Tool storefront to double as a fulfillment center.
1999
SECOND LOCATION
The popularity continued to grow and Pioneer Valley Knife & Tool would open a second location at the local mall, drawing more eyes that would eventually turn into online sales.
2000
PVK.COM
At the dawn of the new millennium, Burbank had been in the brick and mortar retail business for almost a decade only to see the sales grow faster and more vigorously on the World Wide Web. The future was clear, and by the end of the year both shops were closed and the business moved entirely online.
2001
VIDEOKNIFE.COM
The early 2000s would be the first time Jeremiah Burbank would join the PVK team helping his older brother Joshua document knives and host videos on the internet for customers to see the knives in motion. In the pre-YouTube days this was a serious undertaking.
2002-2009
THE INTERNET YEARS
Continuing to build an online presence selling cutlery, these years would be the first real cutlery boom on the internet. We would see the growth of online sales in general, including the growth of competition in the cutlery market online.
2010
BROTHERS FULL TIME
By this point, due to ever increasing online demand, the business needed dedicated help and loyalty. Joshua asked his brother Jeremiah to join him full time, with Jeremiah focusing on the media side of the business, taking over knife-tography, and later expanding to partner. The brothers began considering a larger space to operate the business with the potential for another showroom.
2013
USN GATHERING
Having moved the business to Nashua, NH a year prior, the brothers opened up a showroom again for the first time in many years. Later in 2013, a friend of Josh’s invited him to a knife show in Las Vegas, the “Usual Suspects Network Gathering”, that took place at Planet Hollywood. This trip would forever change the course of PVK.
2014
PVK.VEGAS
Still glowing with neon from last fall’s trip to Las Vegas, the decision was made to move the company once again! The brothers packed up the NH location and made the cross-country trip to Nevada. By late 2014, PVK.com was now PVK.vegas and with the small domain extension change a new updated brand was born.
2017
THE STRIP
After curating an exceptional Vegas style appointment only showroom, friends of the shop suggested moving to an “on the strip” location to expose this awesomeness to the world. Having no fear of risks involving another large move, a location was locked down and the brothers yet again packed up the business and opened up the now infamous PVK VEGAS.
2017-2021
THE VIP
Over the years PVK hosted many members of the community along with knifemakers in the shop on the strip. It became a hub and crucial meeting place for the knife community during events like Shot Show and the USN gathering. Pulling from the previous location, PVK had a VIP portion of the shop located in the back and only accessible during special times to “cleared individuals” or those in the know. Originally created to host celebrity clientele it became a thing of lore.
2022-PRESENT
CHANGES
Post pandemic brought many tears and growing pains. Founder Joshua Burbank passed away and left Jeremiah Burbank at the helm. Shortly thereafter, the real estate where the shop was located on the strip was marked for demolition. The time in Vegas had come to an end for PVK. The remaining brother packed up the shop and headed back east to forge new ground.
Jeremiah dropped the word Vegas from the name, and returned the business to its roots with the three letters PVK standing strong back in the Northeast. We opened a showroom in 2024 located in southern NH, and are once again selling cutlery in person. In 2025 PVK celebrated more than 30 years in the industry.
